Key West Aquarium

The Key West Aquarium is located in Old Town, behind Mallory Square. It is one of the first major tourist attractions of Key West and is well loved by the locals as well as the tourists. The Key West Aquarium is located in an old building and was established in the year 1930s. It houses sharks, sea cucumbers and major fishes that are available around Key West. Even though it is the oldest tourist attraction of the place, yet it attracts large amount of tourists because it offers you a chance to encounter with wildlife and nature.

The Key West Aquarium has a main hall, which showcases several saltwater tanks with no cover on the top. This allows you to see the marine life into the shallow water. The Touch Tank, is the first and the most popular saltwater tank. The visitors are allowed to pick up different marine animals such as horseshoe crabs, sea cucumber or hermit crabs. The tank located at the center has stingrays and cobia. It is fun to watch the rays swim in the water. Your kids will thoroughly enjoy looking at these creatures. The largest tank is located at the back of the hall. It is full of nurse sharks. These are the most harmless sharks and to watch them closely is very exciting.
The side walls of the large hall have lower-level glass tanks that are packed with reef fish. These fishes are found around Key West. You will find variety of hogfish, lobster, squirrelfish, grunts, snapper and many more. The name of the Jewfish has been changed to Goliath Grouper. The tanks are well lit and this helps you to have a good look at the fishes.

The outdoor tank and the waterfront located at the end of the building will offer you various creatures such as sea turtles. It also has dangerous sharks such as sandbar shark, bull shark and reef shark. These are risky than nurse shark and for this reason they have been kept outside.

Then you can move to see the outdoor lagoon of Key West Aquarium.
