It was formerly used as a hunting ground or playground by the Swedish Royal Family in the 13th century. The island was at that time inhabited by moose, bear and deer.

Skansen Zoo was opened on the 11th of October in 1891 with the then available technology. It now features an outdoor museum, a zoo and a recreation area. These days it is known to be an island park for the tourists as well as dwellers of Stockholm.
