Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrate Species

A freshwater aquarium is a vessel that usually contains one or several freshwater organisms including the freshwater plants and animals, especially as a hobby or an aesthetic purpose or even for research works. The most interesting inhabitants of an aquarium include different species of freshwater fishes, freshwater plants, freshwater amphibians, and freshwater invertebrates, the Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrate Species being some of the most exotic inhabitants of a freshwater aquarium.

Invertebrates are included into an aquarium quite often to enhance the beauty of a freshwater aquarium. The Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrate Species that are introduced frequently into a freshwater aquarium are the shrimps, crayfishes, branchiopods and snails.
  • Shrimps –
    • Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) – It is one of the many species of Atyopsis which is a filter-feeder. If you want to keep a bamboo shrimp as a pet in your aquarium, you don’t have to look after it a lot if you keep it in a big water tank.
    • Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) – Shrimp of this species are seen in the region in and around the Yamato River of Japan, and also other parts of Taiwan and Japan. Earlier called Caridina japonica, this shrimp was given its present name in 2006.
    • Black midget shrimp (Caridina sp.) – Caridina belongs to the genus of atyid shrimps residing in fresh water. It can be seen in the subtropical or tropical waters of East Asia, its origin being actually in Taiwan. Because of its ability to eat algae and also for its non-violent nature, Black midget shrimp is incorporated extensively in natural as well as artificial aquariums. The shrimp of this type with white and red bands included in any aquarium is called a red bee or crystal red shrimp whereas the shrimp with black and white bands are called bee shrimps or diamond shrimps.
    • Red Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina denticulata sinensis) – It’s quite simple to care for the Cherry shrimps that are kept in the aquariums as they can adapt themselves in any sort of water type and condition, but for letting them to thrive successfully in the aquarium water, copper should be kept away from the aquarium.
  • Crayfishes –
    • Procambarus alleni – A freshwater crayfish found in Florida
    • Procambarus species – Originating primarily from Central and North America, this type of crayfish belongs to the Cambaridae family
  • Branchiopods -
    • Brine shrimp (Artemia) – This are a species of crustaceans found in saltwater of the water bodies other than oceans.
  • Longtail tadpole shrimp (Triops longicaudatus) – This is a crustacean that lives in freshwater. Having resemblance with a diminutive horseshoe crab, the longtail tadpole shrimp has the features of a long sectioned body with a brown carapace.
  • Snails –
    • Corbicula fluminea (Asian clam) – This freshwater clam belongs originally to Asia but also can be found in Europe and North America.
    • Marisa cornuarietis (apple snail) – This freshwater snail, having an operculum, is a gastropod mollusk that belongs to the Ampullariidae family and lives in water.
    • Planorbis species - Belonging to the family of Planorbidae, this species of snails with sinistral shells, are quite commonly incorporated in the aquariums.
