Among the freshwater aquarium amphibian species you can keep a wide range of newts in your aquarium. This common household pet is the original resident of China. The species is characterized by its typical paddle like tail with a flat brownish body. An average spotted paddle tail newt measures approximately 15 cm to 18 cm. The body is covered with dark spots of brown and chocolate. You can also keep the Axolotl or the Mexican mole salamanders in your freshwater aquarium. The unique character of this salamander is it retains its larval stage throughout life. So although being an amphibian, this freshwater salamander breathes through gills throughout its lifecycle. No lungs develop in it.

The albino clawed frog and the Indonesian floating frog are the two species of aquatic frogs that are kept as pet in aquaria. You can also keep the African dwarf frog as a freshwater aquarium pet. The African dwarf frog lives in sub tropical condition. Hence light incandescent bulb or fluorescent bulbs are enough for lightning your aquarium.

African clawed frog is the close cousin of African dwarf frog. The African clawed frog is an original inhabitant of South Africa.
